When our systems are crumbling – what is leadership in 2023?
Traditional definitions of leadership (focussed on role or position) fail us in a complex interconnected world.
Leadership is not a role or title; it is an emergent quality of a human being ready, willing, and able to stand for something beyond the current status quo. Those best equipped to lead us into a better future will have developed a level of self-awareness, wisdom and heartfulness to guide their thinking, decisions and actions.
Leadership is inherent in all of us and yet it is only available beyond our conditioned responses.
The way a society or culture stays intact is through the replication of a set of patterns (mental thought forms) that become beliefs, worldviews, and central ideas. These become conditioning in the mind of the individual and in the behaviours and reinforcing values of the collective.
When the beliefs, worldviews, and central ideas of an individual or collective are no longer positively evolutionary, we need to revise them to set new, healthier patterns in motion.
The New World Order espoused by a number of so-called “world leaders” and hegemonists, does not set in motion new patterns but further builds on the very patterns causing ill health in our current system. The vision proposed of a technocratic future further fuels an unbalanced deference to technology above humanity, the dark side of late capitalism (humans as a consumer rather than as souls) and an increasing concentration of power and wealth.
These values, if not subverted will take us down an increasingly dark path. We need to lead into a New World experience that celebrates the best of humanity, that encompasses the benefits of technology without becoming reliant on it and that has an ethical interconnected framework as its foundation – not a New World Order.
Death or transformation of what has been opens a wonderful opportunity. Nature operates in cycles of creation and destruction and when systems are failing as something new is needed, band-aid solutions and holding on only cause suffering and ossification.
A leader sees the moment to turn off the life support of the old system and bring new life and does so at a foundational level, in the mind and in the heart.
If we look around us it is obvious that for many of our systems, it is time for death, for transformation. The old world is ready to die – it’s happening whether we try to maintain it or not. A new world needs to be born, one which respects the ageless wisdom of compassion, interconnectedness, kindness and generosity.
We have lost a foundational ethical framework and the current systems (now diseased) now need to crumble for it to re-emerge.
What is leadership in 2023?
Leaders are humans able to act as systemic death doulas (companions, supporters and educators around death and transformation). These leaders support those holding on to let go and move towards a new future.
Leaders are those who inspire new and empowering choices for those ready to lead.
Leaders are the healers (medical professionals, psychologists and others) who heal the whole person as part of a system, not a symptom.
Leaders are artists and creatives who bring beauty and new visions to the world.
Leaders are entrepreneurs creating new and truly regenerative ways of doing business.
Leaders are those who unconditionally fund and energise regenerative ideas and high-integrity humans to do their work.
Leaders are scientists who bring science and spiritual principles together as one whole.
Leaders are educators and parents creating fertile ground for allowing young minds and hearts breathing space to create within a framework of ethics.
Leaders are human beings who in their day-to-day most mundane activities spread kindness and exude calm.
Leaders are those who create a movement of leadership in all of us. Through the dark moments of death and into the light of a new day.
We need all of us to lead.
